Loft boarding near you

Loft Insulation Experts works exclusively on lofts, so Romsey homeowners get a specialist rather than a general builder fitting loft work around other jobs.
We cover Romsey and the surrounding Test Valley villages, from the newer estates at Abbotswood, Valley Park and Woodley through to North Baddesley, Ampfield, Braishfield and Nursling. Andover is 20 minutes up the road, so we are in Romsey most weeks.

Boarding a modern loft in Romsey

A large share of Romsey's newer housing sits on estates built in the last twenty years, and boarding a modern loft is a different job from boarding an older one.

Homes at Abbotswood, Valley Park, Woodley and much of North Baddesley have trussed rafter roofs. The ceiling ties are sized to hold up a plasterboard ceiling, not to carry storage weight, and the diagonal webs cut the space into sections. Cutting or notching any truss member to make room is not an option, so the boarded area has to be designed around the structure as built.

The second issue is insulation depth. Modern homes are built with 270mm to 300mm of insulation laid between and over joists that are typically only 100mm to 150mm deep. Boarding straight onto those joists buries and compresses more than half of it, which is how people end up with a warmer loft and a colder house.

A raised system solves both. It lifts the boarded deck clear of the insulation so the full depth keeps performing, spreads the load across the structure correctly, and leaves the truss members untouched. In older properties around the town centre and the Test Valley villages, where cut roofs and deeper joists are more common, we assess each loft individually and use whichever approach suits the structure.

Areas we cover around Romsey

We board lofts across Romsey, including Abbotswood, Cupernham, Woodley, Valley Park and Whitenap.

We also cover the Test Valley villages: North Baddesley, Ampfield, Braishfield, Nursling, Chilworth, Michelmersh, Timsbury, Awbridge, Wellow, Lockerley, Mottisfont and Sherfield English.

Romsey sits between loft boarding in Southampton and the New Forest, both of which we cover, and we carry out loft boarding across Hampshire and the neighbouring counties from our base near Andover.

Most customers combine boarding with loft insulation or a new loft ladder in the same visit, which works out cheaper than booking the jobs separately.

Loft boarding installation FAQs

How much does loft boarding cost in Romsey?

Prices start from £55 per m². The main factor is the size of the area you want boarded. On the newer estates the truss layout often limits how much of the loft is usable, so we measure the workable area at survey rather than quoting off the floor plan. You get a fixed written price with no obligation.

How long will it take to board my loft?

Most Romsey jobs are completed in a single day. Larger lofts, or jobs that include removing old insulation first, can take two. We aim to have your loft boarded within 3 weeks of your enquiry.

Can you board a loft in a new build?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do around Abbotswood and Valley Park. New builds have trussed rafter roofs with shallow joists and deep insulation, which is exactly the situation a raised boarding system is designed for. We never cut or notch truss members to create space, so the roof structure is left as the designer intended.

Do you cover the villages around Romsey?

Yes. As well as Romsey itself we regularly board lofts in North Baddesley, Ampfield, Braishfield, Nursling, Chilworth, Michelmersh, Timsbury, Awbridge, Wellow, Lockerley, Mottisfont and Sherfield English. There is no extra travel charge within our coverage area.

Will boarding my loft affect my insulation?

Not if it is done properly. Laying boards straight onto the joists squashes the insulation beneath and reduces its performance, which matters most in newer homes where the insulation is far deeper than the joists. We use raised systems that sit above it, so the full 270mm to 300mm depth keeps working and the ventilation gap at the eaves stays clear.

Will loft boarding affect my NHBC or structural warranty?

Not when it is installed correctly. Warranty problems arise when truss members are cut, notched or drilled to make room, which permanently weakens a designed structure. We do not do that. A raised system sits on top of the existing structure and spreads load across it, leaving every truss member intact. If your home is still inside its warranty period and you want certainty, check the terms with your provider before booking and we will supply details of what the installation involves.
