How to Choose a Loft Insulation Installer: 10 Questions to Ask

Quick answer: A good loft insulation installer will inspect your loft before quoting, give you a clear written price, explain what material and depth they will install, and show how they will deal with ventilation, wiring, water tanks and any old insulation. Check that they are insured, look for independent reviews and vetting schemes, and be wary of cold callers, pressure to sign on the day and anyone recommending spray foam without a proper inspection.

Loft insulation is one of the more straightforward home improvements, but the quality of the installation makes a big difference to how well it performs. Poorly fitted insulation can leave gaps, block ventilation and create problems that are expensive to put right later. This guide sets out the questions worth asking before you book an installer, and the warning signs to look out for.

1. Will you survey the loft before giving a price?

Every loft is different. The depth and condition of the existing insulation, the layout of the joists, the position of the water tank, the wiring and the ventilation all affect what work is needed. A reliable installer will want to see the loft, or at least clear photos and measurements, before giving a firm price.

Be cautious of fixed prices given over the phone without any questions about the property. They often lead to extra charges once work starts, or to corners being cut to keep within the quote.

2. What exactly is included in the quotation?

Ask for a written quotation that clearly lists:

  • the insulation material and the finished depth
  • whether existing insulation will be topped up or removed
  • how waste will be removed and disposed of
  • any work to the loft hatch, boarding or ladder
  • how pipes and the water tank will be protected
  • the total cost, including VAT where applicable

A clear quotation makes it easier to compare installers fairly and avoids surprises on the day.

3. What insulation will you use, and how deep?

For mineral wool, 270mm is the depth most commonly recommended, and many installers fit 300mm. If you prefer a natural material, ask whether they install sheep's wool and what depth they recommend. Our guide on how much loft insulation you need explains the recommended depths, and which type of loft insulation is best compares the main materials.

4. Should the old insulation be removed or topped up?

A good installer will give you an honest answer based on the condition of what is already there. Dry, clean insulation can often be topped up. Damp, contaminated or heavily compressed insulation usually needs to come out first.

If an installer recommends removal, ask them to explain why. If they suggest topping up insulation that looks damp or dirty, ask what they will do about it. Our article on whether old loft insulation should be removed or topped up covers the main considerations.

5. How will you deal with ventilation, wiring and the water tank?

These details separate a careful installation from a rushed one. Ask how the installer will:

  • keep eaves ventilation clear so the roof space can breathe
  • deal with recessed downlights that should not be covered
  • lay insulation around electrical cables safely
  • protect the cold water tank and pipework from freezing
  • insulate and draught seal the loft hatch

We explain these points in our guide to installing loft insulation around downlights, cables and water tanks and our article on loft hatch insulation.

6. Can I use the loft for storage afterwards?

If you store things in the loft, tell the installer before they quote. Laying boards directly on top of deep insulation squashes it and reduces its performance. Raised loft boarding allows storage without compressing the insulation. See our guide on boarding a loft after insulating it.

7. Are you insured, and are you independently vetted?

Ask whether the installer holds public liability insurance and whether they belong to any vetting schemes that check businesses independently. Schemes differ in what they assess, so it is worth reading what each one involves.

8. What reviews can I read?

Look for reviews on independent platforms as well as the installer's own website. Pay attention to what customers say about tidiness, communication and how any problems were handled, not just the star rating. You can read what our customers say on our reviews page.

9. What paperwork will I receive when the job is finished?

A professional installer should provide documentation once the work is complete. Ask what this includes, such as photos of the finished installation, warranty details and a record of the materials and depth installed. These can be useful if you sell the house or need to show what work has been done.

10. How soon can you start, and how long will it take?

Most loft insulation jobs are completed in a day or two, depending on the size of the loft and whether old insulation needs removing. Our article on how long loft insulation takes to install gives more detail.

Warning signs to watch out for

  • Cold calling and doorstep sales. Reputable installers rarely need to knock on doors.
  • Pressure to sign immediately. Be wary of discounts that disappear unless you agree on the spot. For contracts agreed in your home, you normally have a 14 day cancellation period.
  • No inspection. A firm price without seeing the loft, or without asking for photos and measurements, is a red flag.
  • Recommending spray foam without explanation. Spray foam can cause problems with moisture, inspections, mortgages and sales. Read whether spray foam insulation is a problem before agreeing to it.
  • Vague quotations. If you cannot tell what is included, ask for it in writing before agreeing to anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth getting more than one quote?

Yes. Comparing two or three written quotations helps you understand what a fair price looks like and what each installer is offering. Make sure you compare like for like, including depth, removal of old insulation and waste disposal.

Should the cheapest quote be avoided?

Not necessarily, but a much lower price can mean old insulation is being left in place, a thinner depth is being installed or details such as the hatch and ventilation are not included. Check what is covered before deciding.

Do I need to be at home during the installation?

Someone usually needs to be available to provide access and agree the work at the start. Ask your installer how they protect the house, particularly the route to the loft, while they work.

What should I do before the installer arrives?

Clear stored items from the loft and the area below the hatch, and make sure there is safe access. Our guide on preparing your loft before insulation or boarding has a full checklist.
